Diffusers come in several formats, and the way a device disperses fragrance determines which products belong in it.
Ultrasonic and nebulizing formats
An ultrasonic diffuser typically uses a water reservoir, while a nebulizing design disperses oil without the same water-based setup. Check the manual for the exact device: reservoir size, permitted oils and cleaning methods vary. A bottle or fitting made for one device may not work with another.
Heat and reed formats
A heated warmer uses a different setup from an electric mist diffuser. Reed diffusers use reeds standing in a prepared diffuser liquid. Neither format makes a carrier oil, perfume oil or essential oil universally compatible; use the liquid and holder specified for that system.
Choose a scent vocabulary
Citrus, floral, herbal and woody notes offer distinct starting points. Orange gives a citrus direction, lavender a floral-herbal one and cedarwood a woody one. Compare an existing blend’s listed notes rather than assuming its name describes every ingredient.
Set up and maintain the device
Follow the stated fill level and operating instructions. Place the device on a stable surface, keep oils away from children and pets, and clean the equipment as directed. Never add oil to a humidifier or another appliance unless its manual specifically permits it.
